Two cartoon characters talking

Ashleigh, 14

Ashleigh’s younger sister Bethany was diagnosed with cancer and has been receiving treatment since July 2003. As the oldest of the children, Ashleigh took over a lot of the responsibility for looking after her siblings, whilst her mother cared for Bethany. She tells us how her sister’s illness affected her.

Beth, 17

When Beth was 5, her brother Tristan, who was 12 at the time, was diagnosed with leukaemia and died a short while later. She tells us how it affected her at the time, and what it is like to have grown up and come to terms with losing her brother.

Sean, 13

When Sean’s younger sister Bethany was diagnosed with cancer, he found that his relationship with his family changed enormously. He tells us how important it was for the family to support one another and face the experience together, and how he overcame his reluctance to talk about his sister’s illness with his friends.

Lauren, 20

Four years ago, Lauren’s brother Matt was diagnosed with testicular cancer when he was just 18. His treatment was successful, but the experience still plays on her mind. She explains how it was hard to come to terms with what it actually meant and how she wished she had someone to talk about her experiences to.
