We don't know why people get cancer but we do know there are ways to reduce your risk. A risk factor is anything that increases a person's chance of getting a disease.

Different cancers have different risk factors. Some risks, such as smoking, can be controlled. Others, like a person's age or family history, can't be. But even having a number of risk factors doesn't mean that a person will get the disease.

It is important to remember that things you do now, while you are still growing up, can help reduce your risk of getting cancer later in life.
