Why they made this site

Macmillan made this site with the aim of helping young people aged 11–17 find out what they wanted to know about cancer. It’s designed to get you clued-up about the illness - giving you accurate and up-to-date information so that you know the facts and can make better choices about your lifestyle.

My brother’s treatment was successful, but the experience still affects me and I still think about it.

People who have been affected by cancer know that it isn’t just the person who has been diagnosed with the illness that needs information and support, but also family and friends. Cancer isn’t something that’s only relevant to older people, it affects everyone.

"When my mum had breast cancer, the main reason I was scared was because I didn’t know what it meant."
Michaela, aged 12

"When my sister was diagnosed with cancer, I didn’t know what to tell my friends or where to go for advice."
Sean, aged 13

A group of young people helped us to get this site together - discussing their needs and what they think you might want to know. We hope we’ve made it easier for you to get what you want in one place.

We want this website to give you a voice, the opportunity to have your say. By sharing your experiences you can give us a clearer picture of how we can help.

We’d also like you to become inspired to support people living with cancer now. That might mean raising money for cancer treatments and Macmillan cancer care services, or just telling your friends, family, or teachers about the help we give.

Macmillan would like to thank the following people and organisations for their support with this project:

  • All the people who allowed us to include their experiences of cancer
  • All the Macmillan professionals and supporters who gave their advice
  • The Butterfly Programme, Children's Cancer Unit, Royal Victoria Infirmary, Newcastle
  • The Nemours Foundation's Centre for Children's Health Media
  • CLIC (Cancer and Leukaemia in Childhood)
