How they can help

Macmillan can help anyone who has been affected by cancer. The main way is through our Macmillan nurses, doctors and other health professionals, who help people with cancer, and their families and friends, from the moment the cancer is discovered.

They help patients make informed decisions about their treatment, and guide them through the maze of different services. They also help people to cope with the symptoms associated with treatment and disease.

Nurses can either help you at home, or in hospital when you or someone close to you is undergoing treatment,

"When I was diagnosed with cancer it was a complete shock. My Macmillan nurse has been with me every step of the way. She's not there to tell you what to do, but just lets you talk and say whatever you feel.

One day I was feeling very low and she even came round for a home visit. It's the unknown that you worry about but you can survive - and my life has turned around for the better." Francis White, 35.

You can speak to a cancer support specialist on 0808 808 00 00, Monday to Friday, 9am-8pm if you have any questions about cancer.

Macmillan also helps teachers and youth workers raise awareness about cancer in school communities. Our Cancertalk website has lots more information for teachers.
